Greg Bliek hosts the Annual President’s Cup at Tahoe Donner Golf course
Greg came to find about Tahoe Donner Golf Club while serving an internship from MSU with Neff Hladik, CGCS at Twelve Bridges. Marc McMullen was looking for an assistant and Greg was looking for a job. As luck would have it, Greg got the job and informed his lovely bride that she would now be living in the heart of the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range. As if all of that had not happened fast enough, Marc decided to move back to take another job in Michigan and Greg was now the Superintendent at Tahoe Donner.
After two years of majoring in Civil Engineering at Calvin College, Greg “realized that being good at CADD was not my lifelong goal. I just kept looking out the window all day.” Seeking to change his environment, he left the grounds crew at Calvin for the maintenance staff at Watermark CC and a year later started the 2-year program at MSU. “My first year on a course convinced me I made the right move. I thought it was great work. Moving up the ladder quickly at Watermark, I knew I would need some schooling to really give it a go.” Greg says “I am in the highlight of my career” as he looks forward to the challenges of fixing up an already spectacular golf course. He says it is going to take a few more years. That is good news as Greg knows he will “never run out of work or get bored.” Plus he never gets tired of seeing 100 acres of turf striped up.
It is not all good for Greg as he misses his family during the busy 7-8 month long mountain golfing season. The good news is he has a 4 to 5 month off-season to make up for lost time. A luxury that all of us 12 month guys wish we had. The other drawback is waiting to see how much turf was lost as the snow melts down and having to re-establish all of those areas that looked so good when the snow fell on them.
Grass is not the only thing Greg has growing, as he and wife, Linda will begin grow-in on a new family member in January. Their son Ryan can’t wait for his new friend, playmate, tormentor to move in. That 6 handicap, that Greg credits to a new set of fitted irons, will undoubted rise a few points thanks to that new family addition. Greg enjoys doing “anything with my family” including remodeling his house, fishing and skiing in addition to chasing the little white ball.
Tahoe Donner was established in the mid 70s. Designer Joseph B. Williams passed away during construction when his airplane went off the runway on landing. Cause of death may have been a heart attack. Billy Bell Jr. finished the back after the tragic accident. The 18-hole yardage changes every year as Greg and staff add tees and bunkers to the course. “When we finish we will have 5 sets of tees and over 7000 yards from the tips and dropping incrementally 4 to 500 yards down to 5000 yds.” No matter which tee you use, the 18th hole with the dramatic drop in elevation to a creek that must be cleared on the 2nd shot, or 4th shot, or, well you’ll see.
Greg says he has rock problems in his soil, but I don’t remember seeing any rocks up there. “We have hundreds of rocks around the course that now have big grooves in them from having to use a Vermeer rock saw to install new lateral lines during our irrigation project back in 2001.” Dealing with the snow presents lots of challenges. Greg says “We use the first Kassbhorer Pisten Bully 170 ever sold in the U. S. (according to Hans, the old mountain manager) to clear up to 8 feet of wet snow off our greens in March.” I gotta tell you Greg, I would probably be more impressed if I knew what the hell you were talking about. Not only that, but Greg and his crew designed and built a tri-plex sled to pull behind the Pisten Bully that will bring a mower to mow greens with a wall of snow all the way around. I’m gonna have to go up there in March or April and see what the heck is goin’ on.
Winning this year’s President Cup was Steve Foster of Lake Chabot G.C. Steve shot a 76 that day. In the Affiliate’s Flight the winner was Don Kittleson of Turf Star. The tournament was a great success.
