Greg Bliek hosts the Annual President’s Cup at Tahoe Donner Golf course

Greg came to find about Tahoe Donner Golf Club while serving an internship from MSU with Neff Hladik, CGCS at Twelve Bridges. Marc McMullen was looking for an assistant and Greg was looking for a job. As luck would have it, Greg got the job and informed his lovely bride that she would now be living in the heart of the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range. As if all of that had not happened fast enough, Marc decided to move back to take another job in Michigan and Greg was now the Superintendent at Tahoe Donner.

After two years of majoring in Civil Engineering at Calvin College, Greg “realized that being good at CADD was not my lifelong goal. I just kept looking out the window all day.” Seeking to change his environment, he left the grounds crew at Calvin for the maintenance staff at Watermark CC and a year later started the 2-year program at MSU. “My first year on a course convinced me I made the right move. I thought it was great work. Moving up the ladder quickly at Watermark, I knew I would need some schooling to really give it a go.” Greg says “I am in the highlight of my career” as he looks forward to the challenges of fixing up an already spectacular golf course. He says it is going to take a few more years. That is good news as Greg knows he will “never run out of work or get bored.” Plus he never gets tired of seeing 100 acres of turf striped up.

It is not all good for Greg as he misses his family during the busy 7-8 month long mountain golfing season. The good news is he has a 4 to 5 month off-season to make up for lost time. A luxury that all of us 12 month guys wish we had. The other drawback is waiting to see how much turf was lost as the snow melts down and having to re-establish all of those areas that looked so good when the snow fell on them.

Grass is not the only thing Greg has growing, as he and wife, Linda will begin grow-in on a new family member in January.
